California, a.k.a. The Land of Wine and Food, is the leading destination in the U.S. for culinary travel. Known for its diverse, eclectic and innovative cuisine, made unique by its abundant year-round supply of locally grown produce and wine, California is home and inspiration to some of the biggest culinary movements, including sustainable wine and food. The giants of California Cuisine – Thomas Keller, Alice Waters – have spawned a whole new generation of smaller, neighborhood chefs and restaurants, which is changing the shape and demographics of great dining. It’s more accessible to everyone, anywhere in the state. Already, 48% of every food dollar goes to the restaurant industry, compared with just 25% 50 years ago (1955) (NRA 2009), and the trends continues to rise. Nearly 21 million travelers in 2008 visited California’s wine regions, which are becoming more popular as consumers learn more about the diverse areas that offer distinct wines, landscape and culinary experiences. Culinary travelers enjoy immersing themselves in the California lifestyle each year, shopping at farmer’s markets, winery hopping, taking a cooking or wine blending class, attending a fabulous winemaker dinner near a beach or in a vineyard, or enjoying a festival in honor of whatever fruit, vegetable or seafood ingredient is being celebrated that week.
